But a <a title=\"Are You Consuming Your Coffee Correctly?\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=0mgmayMSESI\" data-ylk=\"elm:itm;elmt:link;t1:a2;t2:article;t3:body;t8:5c112daf-fd46-3e05-9d61-c3ffc5806574;t9:18;itc:0\" data-rapid_p=\"37\" data-v9y=\"1\">new video by AsapScience<\/a> parses the research and reveals that <strong>the best time to drink coffee is actually not when you first wake up, but about an hour later<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Why? <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>It has to do with our <strong>circadian rhythm<\/strong>, the built-in biological clock that, among other things, regulates the release of cortisol, a hormone related to alertness. <strong>Cortisol levels peak around 8 a.m. and 9 a.m.<\/strong>, AsapScience <a title=\"Are You Consuming Your Coffee Correctly?\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=0mgmayMSESI\" data-ylk=\"elm:itm;elmt:link;t1:a2;t2:article;t3:body;t8:5c112daf-fd46-3e05-9d61-c3ffc5806574;t9:18;itc:0\" data-rapid_p=\"38\" data-v9y=\"1\">notes<\/a>, as part of our natural waking process. And if we drink coffee or other caffeinated beverages during this peak cortisol production phase, the caffeine is less effective. (Science has shown we have two more spikes during the day \u2014 between noon and 1 p.m. and between 5:30 p.m. and 6:30 p.m. \u2014 making those times less than ideal for a coffee break.) Population-based research shows that regular coffee drinkers live longer, with a 10 to 13 percent reduction in risk of premature death, says <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/mikeroussell\" target=\"_blank\">nutritionist Mike Roussell<\/a>.
