Women\u2019s postures are 20% worse than men.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Sitting or standing with your head up and shoulders back, in what is often called a &#8220;<span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><strong>powerful pose<\/strong><\/span>,&#8221; can:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Help prevent back pain<\/li>\n<li>Improve your physical well-being<\/li>\n<li>Make you better at your job (think social media blogging)<\/li>\n<li>Reduce stress<\/li>\n<li>Increase chances for success<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"What_are_Power_Poses\"><\/span><strong>What are Power Poses<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Amy Cuddy, a researcher at Harvard University, who studies body language and the impact it has on your hormones classified different body positions as \u201chigh power\u201d or \u201clow power\u201d poses. Low Power body language is closed and guarded.\" width=\"760\" height=\"523\" srcset=\"https:\/\/dlvrit.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/Power-Poses.jpg 800w, https:\/\/dlvrit.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/Power-Poses-300x206.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 760px) 100vw, 760px\" \/><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong>Striking a powerful, expansive pose changes a person&#8217;s hormones and behavior, just as if he or she had real power.<\/strong><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>From Fast Company, here are three surprising ways your posture impacts your success:<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"1_%E2%80%93_Good_posture_improves_productivity\"><\/span><strong>1 &#8211; Good posture improves productivity<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><strong>The bad news:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Poor posture is one of the leading causes of back pain, which is the second reason for visits to the doctor, outnumbered only by the common cold, according to the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/my.clevelandclinic.org\/health\/diseases_conditions\/hic_your_back_and_neck\/hic_the_basics_of_back_pain\">Cleveland Clinic<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>Poor posture-related back pain costs American employers over $7 billion a year and is the leading cause of disability for employees under the age of 45.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>The good news:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Proper posture contributes to productivity by keeping workers at the office and away from filing disability claims, but is also associated with other health benefits, including:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Higher levels of energy<\/li>\n<li>Reduced incidences of migraine headaches<\/li>\n<li>Lower stress<\/li>\n<li>Greater concentration<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"2_%E2%80%93_Good_posture_improves_confidence\"><\/span><strong>2 &#8211; Good posture improves\u00a0confidence<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>The &#8220;powerful pose&#8221; releases chemicals in the body that can make you more confident.<\/p>\n<p>When you open your chest (push your shoulders back and lift your head), two things happen:<\/p>\n<p>1 &#8211; Testosterone, a hormone associated with greater confidence and power, is released.<\/p>\n<p>2 &#8211; Cortisol, a hormone associated with stress, is lowered.<\/p>\n<p>One <a href=\"http:\/\/researchnews.osu.edu\/archive\/posture.htm\">Ohio State University study<\/a> showed maintaining poor posture for 30 minutes significantly increases stress levels, depression, and fear while holding yourself in an upright posture results in greater confidence and lower stress levels.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"3_%E2%80%93_Good_posture_improves_communication\"><\/span><strong>3 &#8211; Good posture improves communication<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>&#8220;Having poor posture detracts from your leadership.&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Social psychologist, Amy Cuddy, discussed how &#8216;power poses&#8217; can make you feel more confident in her\u00a0<a title=\"Amy Cuddy. Your Body Language Shapes Who You Are\" href=\"http:\/\/www.ted.com\/talks\/amy_cuddy_your_body_language_shapes_who_you_are?language=en\">2012 TED Talk<\/a> on posture.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>In the animal kingdom, power and dominance is about expanding; making yourself look bigger. When animals feel powerless, they crunch up, making themselves appear small.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><strong>When in control:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Cuddy says we mimic this behavior, <span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><strong>standing tall with our hands on our hips<\/strong><\/span> when we\u2019re feeling in control and when we want to exude dominance over someone else.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>When in self-doubt:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><strong>We slouch<\/strong><\/span>, sometimes even wrapping our arms around our bodies.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>According to Cuddy, changing your body language and engaging in the power pose makes you feel more powerful and confident, allowing you to be a better leader.<\/p>\n<h3>Stand Like This for 2 Minutes Per Day<\/h3>\n<h3><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-11524\" src=\"https:\/\/dlvrit.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/wonder-woman-power-pose.jpg\" alt=\"The most well\u2013known and versatile high power posture is nicknamed \u201cThe Wonder Woman\u201d pose.\" width=\"760\" height=\"281\" srcset=\"https:\/\/dlvrit.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/wonder-woman-power-pose.jpg 800w, https:\/\/dlvrit.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/wonder-woman-power-pose-300x111.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 760px) 100vw, 760px\" \/><\/h3>\n<p><em>From James Clear&#8217;s post on\u00a0How to Be Confident and Reduce Stress in 2 Minutes Per Day.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>The most well\u2013known and versatile high power pose is nicknamed \u201cThe Wonder Woman\u201d pose. You just stand tall with your chest out and your hands on your hips. The images above show powerful women like Christine Lagarde and Beyonce in classic \u201cWonder Woman\u201d pose.<\/p>\n<p>***Just to be clear: despite the nickname and the photos, the impact of these poses is just as relevant to men as it is to women.<\/p>\n<h3>Making This Work in Real Life<\/h3>\n<p>If you\u2019re aware of it, body language is easy to adjust throughout your day.<\/p>\n<p>But if you\u2019re like most of us, you get busy with other tasks and completely forget to check your body language. <span style=\"color: #3366ff;\"><strong>Because of this, get into the habit of starting your day in a power pose for 2 or 3 minutes.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>Start your day in a Power Pose:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>1. Wake up and stand in a high power pose for two minutes.<\/p>\n<p>2. Close your eyes, breathe\u00a0in deeply for a count of 3, hold for 1, and then breathe out fully for a count of 5.<\/p>\n<p>3.
