The saying appeared in the 1735 edition of\u00a0<em>Poor Richard&#8217;s Almanack. <\/em>Benjamin Franklin published the annual almanack under the pseudonym of Poor Richard. There&#8217;s good reason to believe that Franklin endorsed the proverb&#8217;s uplifting message and was an early-riser himself!<\/p>\n<p>Another take on the old English proverb: According to Wikipedia, it was anonymously published by Franklin as a letter to suggest Parisians economize on candles by rising earlier to use morning sunlight.<\/p>\n<p>Regardless of the real intent of using the phrase, given the social conventions of the day, it is apparent that Franklin wasn&#8217;t especially bothered when women got to work!<\/p>\n<p class=\"meanings-body\">However, in 1928, Carl Sandburg suggested that:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p class=\"meanings-body\"><strong>Early to bed and early to rise and you never meet any prominent people.<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p class=\"meanings-body\">And, in the <em>New Yorker<\/em>, February 1939, James Thurber turned it round with:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p class=\"meanings-body\"><strong>Early to rise and early to bed makes a male healthy and wealthy and dead.<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p class=\"meanings-body\"><a href=\"https:\/\/dlvrit.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/James-Thurber-Quote.png\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-11606\" src=\"https:\/\/dlvrit.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/James-Thurber-Quote.png\" alt=\"Early to rise and early to bed makes a man healthy, wealthy, and dead.\" width=\"760\" height=\"280\" srcset=\"https:\/\/dlvrit.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/James-Thurber-Quote.png 1024w, https:\/\/dlvrit.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/James-Thurber-Quote-300x111.png 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 760px) 100vw, 760px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<h3 class=\"first\"><strong><span class=\"first last\">Seven reasons why you should wake up earlier<\/span><\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><span class=\"first\">The <a title=\"Early Riser || wake-up calls from fellow students \/ Prof.\" href=\"http:\/\/my.umbc.edu\/groups\/archive\/discussions\/14610\">UMBC Wake-up Club<\/a>, a not-for-profit student organization founded on Franklin&#8217;s belief that &#8220;Early to bed and early to rise makes a man healthy, wealthy and wise&#8221;, proposes seven reasons why you should wake up earlier:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><span class=\"first last\"><span class=\"first last\">Prevent oversleeping and being late for school or work.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"first last\">&#8220;Many students are late for classes due to oversleeping.&#8221;<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span class=\"first last\">Breakfast is the most important meal of the day, but it&#8217;s also one of the most skipped meals.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span class=\"first last\">Working out in the morning is one of the best ways to get your day going. Not only does it give you that energy boost, but also helps you sleep better at night.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span class=\"first last\">If you were to get up just one hour earlier each morning, you would gain 15 days in a year.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span class=\"first last\">Once you keep waking up early, it&#8217;ll be easy to get to bed early, too. Getting the proper amount of sleep not only gets you more energized for the day, but it also improves your mental health, creativity, and weight control.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span class=\"first last\">Many early risers cite increased creativity and inspiration in the morning hours. Great works of art and novels got written in the first hours of the day.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span class=\"first last\">The early risers are one step ahead of the crowd: calm, collected, and accomplished when everyone else is rushing to the office. The early-bird has it under control. When you wake up early, you have more time for planning, strategic thinking, and getting organized.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<div class=\"last\">\n<h3><strong>The Reality: How many hours of sleep do you need a night<\/strong><\/h3>\n<\/div>\n<p class=\"meanings-body\">Despite the compelling reasons listed above to wake up earlier, the reality is that we are not getting enough sleep. There may be truth to Sandburg&#8217;s and Thurber&#8217;s twist on the old proverb.<\/p>\n<p class=\"meanings-body\">Recent studies show that in the US, 40% of Americans get less than the recommended seven to nine hours of sleep. Those figures are largely unchanged from Gallup polls in the 1990&#8217;s and 2000&#8217;s, but <strong>Americans, on average, slept much more in the 1940&#8217;s.<\/strong> Americans currently average 6.8 hours of sleep at night, down more than an hour from 1942.<\/p>\n<p class=\"meanings-body\"><a href=\"https:\/\/dlvrit.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/Hours-Sleep-Per-Night1.png\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-11614\" src=\"https:\/\/dlvrit.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/Hours-Sleep-Per-Night1.png\" alt=\"How many hours of sleep do you get per night?\" width=\"760\" height=\"522\" srcset=\"https:\/\/dlvrit.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/Hours-Sleep-Per-Night1.png 1024w, https:\/\/dlvrit.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/Hours-Sleep-Per-Night1-300x206.png 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 760px) 100vw, 760px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<h3 class=\"first\"><strong>Experts recommend seven to nine hours of sleep for adults<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p class=\"first\">A panel of leading sleep experts recently announced that <strong>adults should be getting a minimum of seven hours of sleep per night<\/strong>. And if you&#8217;re regularly not getting enough shut-eye, your health may suffer.
