It is the practice of doing more pleasurable things in place of less pleasurable ones\u00a0or carrying out less urgent tasks instead of more pressing ones, thus putting off impending tasks to a later time.<\/p>\n<p>Sometimes, procrastination takes place until the &#8220;last minute&#8221; before a deadline. People may procrastinate personal issues (raising a stressful issue with a partner), health problems (seeing a doctor or dentist), home care issues (patching a leak in a roof), or academic\/work obligations (completing a report). Procrastination can lead to feelings of guilt, inadequacy, depression and self-doubt.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/dlvrit.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/Chronic-Procrastinator.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-12724\" src=\"https:\/\/dlvrit.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/Chronic-Procrastinator.jpg\" alt=\"20 percent of people chronically avoid difficult tasks\" width=\"760\" height=\"507\" srcset=\"https:\/\/dlvrit.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/Chronic-Procrastinator.jpg 1000w, https:\/\/dlvrit.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/Chronic-Procrastinator-300x200.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 760px) 100vw, 760px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Procrastination_is_the_Gap_Between_Intention_and_Action\"><\/span><strong>Procrastination is\u00a0the Gap Between Intention and Action<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>There are many ways to avoid success in life, but the most sure-fire just might be\u00a0procrastination.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Procrastinators sabotage themselves.<\/li>\n<li>They put obstacles in their own path.<\/li>\n<li>They actually choose paths that hurt their performance.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Why_do_People_Procrastinate\"><\/span><strong>Why do People Procrastinate?<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<h3>1 &#8211; Twenty percent of people identify themselves as chronic procrastinators. <strong>That is as many as 1 in 5 adults (not just students!) may be chronic procrastinators.<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>For a habitual procrastinator, procrastination is a lifestyle, albeit a flawed one. And it cuts across all domains of their life. (<a title=\"Procrastination: Ten Things To Know\" href=\"https:\/\/www.psychologytoday.com\/articles\/200308\/procrastination-ten-things-know\">Psychology Today<\/a>)<\/p>\n<p>Examples of a chronic procrastinator:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Don&#8217;t pay bills on time.<\/li>\n<li>Miss opportunities for buying tickets to concerts.<\/li>\n<li>Don&#8217;t cash gift certificates or checks.<\/li>\n<li>File income tax returns late.<\/li>\n<li>Leave their Christmas shopping until Christmas Eve.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>2 &#8211;\u00a0Procrastination is <strong><em>not<\/em> a problem of time management or planning<\/strong>.<\/h3>\n<blockquote><p>Procrastinators are not different in their ability to estimate time, <strong>although they are more optimistic than others<\/strong>. &#8220;Telling someone who procrastinates to buy a weekly planner is like telling someone with chronic depression to just cheer up.&#8221;\u00a0&#8211;\u00a0Joseph Ferrari, Ph.D., associate professor of psychology at De Paul University in Chicago<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<h3>3 &#8211;<strong>\u00a0Procrastinators lie to themselves.<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>When we procrastinate, we are making excuses for poor performance and behavior. We become expert at making excuses to put off things that we need to get done.<\/p>\n<p>Here are some phrases that indicate you are making excuses and are procrastinating (a nicer way of saying you are lying to yourself), which will hinder your success:<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>&#8220;I work best under pressure.&#8221;<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<blockquote><p>When you procrastinate, you try to trick yourself into thinking that you perform your best when pressured by a deadline. However, this is never the case. When you put things off until later, you have less time to review and finalize, so you have more errors in the finished product. However, this excuse usually means that you will still be very busy later. Time is always the same, regardless of how \u201cbusy\u201d you are.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><em><strong>&#8220;I\u2019m not a procrastinator; I\u2019m a perfectionist.&#8221;<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Both types of people like to take their time, but the difference here is that there is motivation for delaying.
