After reading through his list, I was inspired to do a follow-up post that shows you how to implement many of his great ideas in growing blog traffic. We won&#8217;t cover all 35 &#8211; some don&#8217;t require much explaining. However, others require a few steps and for that reason, I&#8217;ll expand upon Andy&#8217;s ideas over several blog posts.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"author-name\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"The_Ultimate_Playbook_to_Grow_Your_Blog_Traffic_%E2%80%93_Part_1\"><\/span>The Ultimate Playbook to Grow Your Blog Traffic &#8211; Part 1<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>There is a reason why we listed search optimization first. It is the number one source of blog traffic (when done correctly). It takes work but well worth the time, and the results speak for themselves.<\/p>\n<h3>1 &#8211; Be Visible on Search by Optimizing your Blog\u2019s Content for SEO<\/h3>\n<p>Andy Merchant:<em>\u00a0To grow your blog traffic, readers\u00a0must find you in search engine results. Make sure to optimize your blog content for SEO by creating Meta descriptions, using relevant keywords and linking your blog to other websites, among other ways. Also, make your blog\u2019s infographics, pictures, videos and everything else SEO friendly.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Ryan Cote, from\u00a0<a title=\"Wordpress SEO Optimization for Small Businesses\" href=\"http:\/\/www.wpamplify.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">WPamplify<\/a>,\u00a0shared his advice on the\u00a0easiest things you can do to grow blog traffic is to increase your ranking in search engine result pages (SERPs):<\/p>\n<h3>\u2013&gt;\u00a0Optimize Your Metadata for Relevant and Local Keywords<\/h3>\n<p><a title=\"\" href=\"http:\/\/whatis.techtarget.com\/definition\/metadata\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Metadata<\/a>\u00a0tells the search engines what your page is about. Note that I said \u201cpage&#8221;, and not \u201cwebsite&#8221;. If you look at the source code of your Web pages, you\u2019ll find that each one begins with an HTML tag. In the HTML language, it is the information between two tags \u2013 the opening tag and the closing tag \u2013 that tells you what the tag is affecting. In this case, the tags looks like this:<\/p>\n<p>&lt;head&gt;<\/p>\n<p>&lt;\/head&gt;<\/p>\n<p>The opening of the tag \u201c&lt;head&gt;&#8221; has some other tags in there. As the name implies, this tag houses the heading of each page. Within this heading, you\u2019ll see another tag entitled \u201c&lt;title&gt;&#8221;. The information in between the opening title tag and the closing title tag is where the metadata for your Web page will appear.<\/p>\n<p>In a search engine, this will be what the name of the page is, often underlined in blue and hyperlinked to your page. <strong>For every page on your website, you need to add applicable and relevant keywords, so the search engines have an idea of what your page is about.<\/strong> On the page itself, website visitors will not see this metadata. They will, however, see it in the title bar of the window. To that extent, you need to keep the title short with either one keyword or one keyword phrase so that the search engines have an easier time finding your page.<\/p>\n<p>Use keywords that allow your business to stand out. It&#8217;s important to get the right kind of blog traffic to keep your exit rate low and time on site high. Search engines take these things into consideration when ranking your site.<\/p>\n<h3>\u2013&gt; Submit Your Business Information to Directories<\/h3>\n<p>Your mission is to make it simple for people to find you.\u00a0Directory Bug\u00a0has an excellent\u00a0<a title=\"\" href=\"http:\/\/www.directorybug.com\/top100\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">list of 100 local directories<\/a>\u00a0to submit your information to so that people can find you. Business Directories are an easy and often free way to grow blog traffic.<\/p>\n<p>Every place you send your information is just one more chance customers have to find you.\u00a0Take the time \u2013 even if it takes a couple of hours \u2013 to submit your information to each and every directory.\u00a0Every directory that you fail to provide information to can be seen as the same as if you left money behind on the table.<\/p>\n<h3>\u2013&gt;\u00a0Add Local Schema Markup to Your Website<\/h3>\n<p>As important as it is to modify the title tag on each of your Web pages to match the page content,\u00a0schema markup gives search engines the ability to classify your page even further.<\/p>\n<p>As a local business, you probably hold events. Schema markup will allow the search engine to scan your page for specific \u201crich snippets\u201d so that these events will appear dynamically in the SERP entry.<\/p>\n<p>For example, the SERP entry will have the:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Name of your business<\/li>\n<li>URL of your business\u2019 home page<\/li>\n<li>Three or four other entries that show a date followed by an event<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The interesting thing about schema markup used in this manner is that the dates and events are dynamic. If the date was September 28, and you had an event October 3, the entry for that event will only be in the search engines up until October 3. Once the date comes and goes, the event will no longer show up in the SERP entry. It will go away dynamically, without you having to change anything manually. Schema markup not only tells a search engine what the data says, but it tells the search engine what the data\u00a0<i>means<\/i>.<\/p>\n<p>A dynamic collaborative effort from Google, Bing, and Yahoo! put together a website,\u00a0<a title=\"\" href=\"http:\/\/schema.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">schema.org<\/a>\u00a0to help business owners just like you to clearly understand what schema markup is. Essentially, schema markup will allow your website to rank that much better \u2013 based on the type of content that is on your site. There is data markup for just about every type of data possible.<\/p>\n<p><strong>To give you an idea where\u00a0you stand regarding SEO, and how much work is ahead of you, SEO\u00a0expert\u00a0<a title=\"Art Enke\" href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/artenke\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Art Enke<\/a> provided us with the tools you&#8217;ll need to conduct a basic SEO audit to grow your blog traffic. \u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<h3 class=\"entry-title\">How to Conduct a Basic (But Effective) SEO Audit in Under 30 Minutes<\/h3>\n<p><strong><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-5286 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/dlvrit.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/Google-Webmaster-Tools.png\" alt=\"How to Grow Your Blog Traffic: Google Webmaster Tools provides detailed information for site owners and should be used alongside any other tools you use for an SEO site audit.\" width=\"157\" height=\"294\" \/>1 &#8211; Webmaster Tools (5 minutes)<\/strong><br \/>\n<a title=\"Google Webmaster Tools\" href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/webmasters\/tools\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Google Webmaster Tools<\/a>\u00a0provides detailed information for site owners and should be used alongside any other tools you use for an SEO site audit. Of course, this won\u2019t be available for competitor sites, but you\u2019ll gain some valuable tips for your own.<\/p>\n<p>Webmaster Tools gives visibility into how content is crawled, provides backlink data, shows which domain is set as the preferred\/canonical domain and more. Spend five minutes mostly viewing the sections under \u201cSearch Traffic\u201d, \u201cGoogle Index\u201d and \u201cCrawl\u201d. Under Search Traffic, you\u2019ll see if there are any \u201cManual Actions\u201d or Google penalties manually applied to your site. If there are penalties present, these will need to be resolved first before the site can perform properly.<\/p>\n<p>Important Note: Google Webmaster Tools is useful for viewing general trends and finding trouble spots. However, it is rarely accurate for providing true values and data. In other words, don\u2019t rely on it as a quantitative tool.<\/p>\n<p><strong>2 &#8211; Screaming Frog (10 minutes*)<\/strong><br \/>\nAfter discovering general trouble spots from Webmaster Tools, you can then use\u00a0<a title=\"Screaming Frog\" href=\"http:\/\/www.screamingfrog.co.uk\/seo-spider\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Screaming Frog<\/a>\u00a0to thoroughly crawl all of your site content. It\u2019s a handy desktop application that shows you how Googlebot and other crawlers see your content and can be used to quickly identify priority issues such as duplicate titles, 404 pages, inadvertent directives blocking content and much more. As a\u00a0bonus, it\u2019s free to crawl up to 500 URIs (note: URIs are different than URLs).<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-5288 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/dlvrit.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/screaming_frog_dlvrit.png\" alt=\"How to Grow Your Blog Traffic: quickly identify priority issues such as duplicate titles, 404 pages, inadvertent directives blocking content and much more\" width=\"628\" height=\"361\" srcset=\"https:\/\/dlvrit.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/screaming_frog_dlvrit.png 628w, https:\/\/dlvrit.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/screaming_frog_dlvrit-300x172.png 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 628px) 100vw, 628px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Run Screaming Frog on any domain (competitor sites included) then export a \u201cCrawl Overview\u201d from the Reports tab once the crawl is finished. Even before the crawl is finished (*large sites will take longer), you can export a report anytime during the process by stopping the crawl and exporting a .CSV file with all the data.<\/p>\n<p><strong>3 &#8211; Google Site Search Command (5 minutes)<\/strong><br \/>\nOnce you have some quantitative data from the site crawl, use the information to compare what you see in Google by using various site search commands in the Google search bar. Here are some of the handiest commands:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>site:rootdomain.com\u00a0shows all indexed pages under a domain<\/li>\n<li>site:rootdomain.com -www.\u00a0shows subdomains indexed<\/li>\n<li>site:subdomain.rootdomain.com\u00a0shows all content indexed on a particular subdomain<\/li>\n<li>site:rootdomain.com inurl:keyword\u00a0shows all URLs containing a particular keyword<\/li>\n<li>site:rootdomain.com intitle:keyword\u00a0shows indexed pages with a specific keyword in the title<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>What\u2019s important here is that you use the above search commands to compare what you discovered in your Screaming Frog crawl and contrast that information with actual content Google has indexed.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-5289 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/dlvrit.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/google_site-search_command_dlvrit.png\" alt=\"How to Grow Your Blog Traffic: Once you have some quantitative data from the site crawl, use the information to compare what you see in Google by using various site search commands in the Google search bar.\" width=\"628\" height=\"372\" srcset=\"https:\/\/dlvrit.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/google_site-search_command_dlvrit.png 628w, https:\/\/dlvrit.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/google_site-search_command_dlvrit-300x177.png 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 628px) 100vw, 628px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Quick Tip: Generally speaking, if your site crawl reveals a site has more content (HTTP pages) than what Google actually indexes, the site has crawling\/indexing issues. In contrast, if there is much more content indexed in Google than what is found in your crawl, then there are duplicate content issues.<\/p>\n<p><strong>4 &#8211; Page Speed (5 minutes)<\/strong><br \/>\nThere are multiple page speed tools that can give you exhaustive action items for your developer. Some of the best are\u00a0<a title=\"Web page Test\" href=\"http:\/\/www.webpagetest.org\/result\/140416_N2_12VZ\/\">WebPagetest<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a title=\"Google Pages Insight\" href=\"https:\/\/developers.google.com\/speed\/pagespeed\/insights\/?url=rei.com\">Google PageSpeed Insights<\/a>. These provide waterfall views, compression opportunities, script errors, broken file paths and other items which affect page load time. Additionally, you can see very specific site performance issues for both mobile and desktop browsers.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-5290 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/dlvrit.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/pagespeed_dlvrit.png\" alt=\"How to Grow Your Blog Traffic: These provide waterfall views, compression opportunities, script errors, broken file paths and other items which affect page load time.\" width=\"628\" height=\"540\" srcset=\"https:\/\/dlvrit.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/pagespeed_dlvrit.png 628w, https:\/\/dlvrit.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/pagespeed_dlvrit-300x257.png 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 628px) 100vw, 628px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>5 &#8211; Ahrefs (3 minutes)<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>In just a few minutes using Ahrefs.com, you can see the number of backlinks pointing to a site along with anchor text information.<\/p>\n<p>You\u2019ll like the\u00a0<a title=\"Ahrefs.com\" href=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/site-explorer\/overview\/subdomains\/?target=rei.com\">Ahrefs<\/a>\u00a0anchor cloud which reveals which anchor text phrases are most used. If a high percentage of links are coming from a keyword phrase instead of the company\u2019s brand or home page, then the backlinks are over-optimized and prone to Penguin penalties and potential manual action by Google.<\/p>\n<h3>\u2013&gt; Next, make your infographics, pictures, and videos SEO friendly.<\/h3>\n<p>Don&#8217;t miss the huge opportunity images bring to grow your blog traffic.\u00a0<a title=\"Google Search Share Stable, Bing Growth Continues At Yahoo\u2019s Expense\" href=\"http:\/\/searchengineland.com\/google-search-share-stable-bing-continues-cannibalize-yahoo-187124\">Google sees about 12 Billion searches per month<\/a>. Of those searches, 10% are image searches &#8211; people are searching for 1.2 Billion images per month.\u00a0The <strong>Image Alt tag is used to identify the best image to return for a search query<\/strong>. From these numbers, you can tell the importance of giving your images every chance to be included in image search results.<\/p>\n<p>Image Alt tags are short descriptions added to images to help identify what the image is. The Image Alt tag is added to the end of the image source URL.<\/p>\n<p>&lt;img src=\u201dhttp:\/\/www.blog.dlvr.it.com\/socialmediaminute.png\u201d\u00a0alt=\u201dAdd Alt Tags to Improve SEO\u201d \/&gt;<\/p>\n<p>When you add an\u00a0<a title=\"Perfect Image Posting to Social Media: The ONE Number You Need To Know\" href=\"http:\/\/blog.dlvr.it\/2014\/07\/perfect-image-posting-to-social-media-the-one-number-you-need-to-know\/\">image to a post<\/a>, it is important to add Alt tags for these reasons:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Search Engines:\u00a0Search engines are better equipped at reading text (images are difficult to read). The Alt tag is text based. Search engines can quickly interpret what the image is about and display it in search results.<\/li>\n<li>Visually Impaired:\u00a0The visually impaired use special devices to browse the web. Alt tags help the visually impaired identify and interpret what images are displayed on a page.<\/li>\n<li>Image Fails to\u00a0Load:\u00a0If an image fails to load, the text in the Alt tag\u00a0is displayed alerting the reader that an image should be there.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Optimizing Image Alt tags for Search<\/h3>\n<p>The Image Alt tag is a great place to include your primary keyword(s) but proceed\u00a0with caution.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Use appropriate text that describes the image. If you don\u2019t, it could negatively impact your website\u2019s SEO.<\/li>\n<li>Keep the text short and to the point.<\/li>\n<li>Write for humans, not search engines. No keyword stuffing!<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Write the Image Alt tag as if you had to quickly describe the topic of the page.<\/p>\n<h3>Adding Image Alt Tags in WordPress<\/h3>\n<p>WordPress makes it easy to add an Alt tag to each image. When you add media to WordPress, there are several boxes for you to complete including the Alt Text box.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-6859 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/dlvrit.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/How-to-add-Alt-tags-to-images-in-WordPress.png\" alt=\"How to Grow Your Blog Traffic: Alt Text Box Example in WordPress\" width=\"760\" height=\"361\" srcset=\"https:\/\/dlvrit.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/How-to-add-Alt-tags-to-images-in-WordPress.png 760w, https:\/\/dlvrit.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/How-to-add-Alt-tags-to-images-in-WordPress-300x142.png 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 760px) 100vw, 760px\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">If you look closely, you will also see the Description field. This field was initially intended to add more context to the image for the visually impaired. Here you can include text from the blog post that supports the details of the image. Like the Alt Tag, the image Description appears in the HTML of the page.<\/p>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: left;\">2 &#8211; Conduct Keyword Research Before Writing your Blog Posts<\/h3>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Andy Merchant:<em>\u00a0<\/em><em>Each blog post should be focused on a particular subject that people actually care about. These days, subjects are defined by keywords.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Optimize keywords throughout your post.\u00a0Keyword research is essential for on page optimization which leads to more blog traffic.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Make sure to write your content for humans. Think quality first. It\u2019s free, reliable and pretty fast!<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Our busy editor, <a title=\"Debra Garber\" href=\"https:\/\/dlvrit.com\/blog\/author\/dgarber\/\">Debra Garber<\/a>, the person who turns my grammar mistakes into poetry (<em>editor note: not going to attempt to correct this analogy&#8230;<\/em>), uses several tools for keyword research. One tool she finds particularly useful is Scribe for Microsoft Word.<\/p>\n<p>From Debra: We use Scribe to help us with the following (3) core initiatives for blog post success:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><strong>Determine relevant keywords.<\/strong>\u00a0What words and phrases will our readers use to find our blog content?<\/li>\n<li><strong>Write strong meta titles and descriptions.<\/strong>\u00a0Meta titles and descriptions tell search engines and readers what\u2019s on the page.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Balance keyword density with readability<\/strong>. Determine how often keywords appear within the content.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><strong>One tool to simplify the editorial blog post process and optimize for SEO at the same time:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I was excited to learn that within Microsoft Word, I could perform keyword research and content analysis using the Scribe plugin.
