The use of emojis has opened up many creative opportunities for marketers.<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>___<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"The_Psychology_of_Emojis_in_Todays_World\"><\/span><strong>The Psychology of Emojis in Todays World<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<h3><strong>1 &#8211; In short, emojis\u00a0are changing our brains!<\/strong><\/h3>\n<blockquote><p>Emoticons are a new form of language that we&#8217;re producing, and to decode that language we&#8217;ve produced a new pattern of brain activity. &#8211; According to researcher, Dr Owen Churches, from the school of psychology at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.flinders.edu.au\/\">Flinders University<\/a> in Adelaide.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Back to my usage of the smiley face emoticon \ud83d\ude42 &#8230;<\/p>\n<p>The smiley face emoticon first appeared in a post to Carnegie Mellon University computer science general board from Professor Scott E. Fahlman in 1982.\u00a0Since then, the same pattern of activity as evoked by faces has become attached to what was previously just punctuation.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;There is no innate neural response to emojis that babies are born with. Before 1982 there would be no reason that <strong>&#8216;:-)<\/strong>&#8216; would activate face sensitive areas of the cortex but now it does because we&#8217;ve learned that this represents a face,&#8221; says Churches.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong>This is an entirely culturally-created neural response. It&#8217;s really quite amazing.<\/strong><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<ul>\n<li>You knew that 34 years later and our brain is now fully capable of recognizing and decoding emoticons and emojis as a new language, primarily because social media fully embraced and spread this trend.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><strong>2 &#8211;\u00a0Emojis are also\u00a0changing our speech patterns!<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>While emoji is not, strictly speaking, a language, in the way that English, French or Japanese are languages, it is certainly a powerful system of communication.<\/p>\n<p>Today emoji is seemingly everywhere, having spread far beyond their original messaging systems.<\/p>\n<p>For example, the New York Subway has now introduced a system, using emoji, to advise passengers of the status of particular subway lines &#8211; whether trains are running on time or not.<\/p>\n<p>As the <a title=\"New York has a new emoji index for its subway system, so we made you an emoji tube map\" href=\"http:\/\/www.citymetric.com\/transport\/new-york-has-new-emoji-index-its-subway-system-so-we-made-you-emoji-tube-map-1210\">NY City website explains<\/a>:<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u201cWe&#8217;re trying to estimate\u00a0agony on the NYC subway by monitoring the\u00a0time between trains and adding unhappy points for stations typically crowded at rush hour.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Here\u2019s an example:<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-16054\" src=\"https:\/\/dlvrit.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/NYC-Subway-Emoji-Map.png\" alt=\"Emoji meanings of a NYC subway map\" width=\"500\" height=\"694\" srcset=\"https:\/\/dlvrit.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/NYC-Subway-Emoji-Map.png 330w, https:\/\/dlvrit.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/NYC-Subway-Emoji-Map-216x300.png 216w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"What_Are_All_The_Emoji_Meanings_Anyway\"><\/span><strong>What Are All The Emoji Meanings, Anyway?<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Rather than saying \u201cthis makes me happy,\u201d you can use \ud83d\ude03.<\/p>\n<p>Rather than saying \u201cI agree with you,\u201d you can use \ud83d\udc4d.<\/p>\n<p>Emoji use has skyrocketed as both individuals and brands embrace them\u2014so much so that Oxford Dictionaries named an emoji <a href=\"http:\/\/blog.oxforddictionaries.com\/2015\/11\/word-of-the-year-2015-emoji\/\">Word of the Year<\/a> after seeing over a 3x increase in use in 2015 versus the previous year.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Surprisingly, though, according to\u00a0Appboy, when they looked at the most frequently used emojis by brands, they\u00a0were surprised to find that the <strong>\u201ctears of joy\u201d emoji wasn\u2019t the top one used by brands in their marketing messaging &#8211;\u00a0<\/strong>it wasn\u2019t even in the top ten!<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>They found that emojis most frequently used by individuals differed from those used by brands.<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u2192<\/strong>Individuals using emojis in their Tweets,\u00a0often use face emojis, including \u201ctears of joy\u201d to express how they\u2019re feeling.<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u2192<\/strong>Brands, on the other hand, <strong>use\u00a0more eye-catching emojis and those that evoke emotional responses<\/strong>. Beware&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>1. The frog emoji. It&#8217;s a way of calling someone ugly.<\/p>\n<p>2. A dog emoji. It&#8217;s a way of calling someone the &#8220;b-word&#8221; without actually saying it.<\/p>\n<p>3. A knife, followed by a face, followed by a showerhead. It means they&#8217;re calling you a psycho.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Hum.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>And, if you use Snapchat regularly, you may have noticed in your chat window there are emojis displayed next to some of your friends. Without rigid semantics attached to them, an emoji symbol can take on different meanings based on the context of a message.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>The goal of this project is to build tools and algorithms to improve machine understandability of emoji.
